You spoke, the White House answered!

Hey, you remember that tongue-in-cheek white house petition demanding gun-free zones for the prez and vp?

Well, it got over 40,000 signatures. Which means, as I understand it, that some poor whitehouse cubicle rat is required to spend his valuable time responding. One of them actually did, which surprises me. The response itself isn’t all that surprising, though…

We live in a world where our elected leaders and representatives are subject to serious, persistent, and credible threats on a daily basis. Even those who are mere candidates in a national election become symbols of our country, which makes them potential targets for those seeking to do harm to the United States and its interests. In 1901, after the third assassination of a sitting President, Congress mandated that the President receive full-time protection, and that law is still in effect today. Because of it, those who are the subject of ongoing threats must receive the necessary and appropriate protection.

Let me boil that down for you…

We’re important and your kids aren’t, so f*ck you.

Said cubicle rat then launches into a paternalistic diatribe cribbed entirely from January Obama speeches, complete with video clip.

There. I read it, so you don’t have to. No charge. I enjoyed Robb Allen’s response

If you were to take a lecture from Bill Clinton on marital fidelity, followed by a two hour Power Point presentation from Quintin Tarantino entitled “How to Prevent the Coarsening of Popular Culture Via Cinema”, you would still not reach 1/10000th the hypocrisy of politicians saying your children are better served by gun free zones while they are not.

ETA: On second reading, I’d like to note the irony of which law the Obama administration considers absolutely sacrosanct, among the tens of thousands it flouts and/or revises on any whim.
