Ghost does have this one teensy idiosyncracy…

He’s smart, he’s not dangerously impulsive, he’s dedicated to his routine, but when he hears or maybe smells that our weekender neighbors S&L are around, he’s gone in a cloud of dust.

And sometimes L calls to tell me he showed up, and sometimes she doesn’t. So I have to phone and find out, and if nobody picks up the phone then I have to drive over there to see for myself. Can’t just assume, even though that’s always where he ends up going. Unless Landlady’s around, of course, in which case he might be over there. And her dog might be over here.

And Ghost isn’t the only one around here dedicated to his routine, and so my weekend is off to an all-too-familiar start.

It only upsets me because I really have become a hermit. And hermits are neurotic people. People with control issues. I know I talk about embracing chaos, but some sorts are easier to get my arms around than others.

We used to have a black lab when I was growing up that was so damn friendly that he basically turned into the whole neighborhoods pet.

The little joker almost had a regular schedule of who and when he would visit during the week.

If we went out to call him and couldn’t find him it just became a process of elimination on the telephone.

The ex’s jack russel was usually very good at staying to guard the house and the rest of the menagerie, except for a few times, when he came home late, and smelling of girlie perfume.

We never did find out who’s it was.
