So Matthew Bracken is giving away free kindle downloads of his books. I bought a copy of Enemies Foreign and Domestic way back when. Read it through. Still have it around here somewhere. It wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t great, I didn’t buy either sequel.
But free is a good price, so maybe.
But I don’t have a Kindle, so I’ll just have to download one of these “app” things people are always on about.
But I use Linux. They don’t have an app for Linux.
Oh, they have a “Kindle Cloud Reader” that will work. But it doesn’t support Firefox. I’m not going to load Chrome just to read a Bracken novel I probably wouldn’t finish.
VHS, meet Betamax. Betamax, VHS.

He got better as he progressed with subsequent books. Not stylistic masterpieces, but all the same – readable and useful.
If you’re feeling ambitious…
1. “Buy” the book. Specify that it go to “Kindle for PC” (like you say, no Linux version). Good luck with that, because Amazon has a tendency to dump it to the cloud regardless of what you choose.
a. If they dumped to the cloud, go to your cloud account and move it to Kindle for PC.
2. Download Kindle for PC. Hope it runs correctly in a Win emulator.
3. Download the book to your computer.
4. Download Calibre (freeware & there’s a Linux version. whoo-hoo!)
5. Use Calibre to convert the proprietary Amazon format to .mobi.
6. Read converted book in most ebook readers.
Or suggest that Bracken find a distributor who’ll actually distribute books to potential readers. I went through this for the first book, but I’m just not feeling motivated enough to jump through all those hoops again.
Cloud reader works fine for me in firefox.
I bought a Cruz android tablet thing-gummy to download books. Will take most any format. I’ve got a lot of books on it now, but don’t use it much for anything but serious stuff. Just can’t get the hang of enjoying anything but a paper book… and the navigation on this tablet sucks big time. But it gives me a way to get a lot of books for little money, so it’s a fair trade off.
As for Bracken’s book… I’ve read them and can’t see anything particularly great in any of it. Same for the Rawles books. Pretty depressing, actually. What is the point of prepping for that future?
