Normal. Abbie Normal.

You know how people spend a few days in the boonies and can’t wait to get back to civilization? There’s nothing to do, it’s too quiet, their cell reception sucks, there’s a thousand good reasons. That’s how you know they’re normal.

I’ve been to the nearest town every day for the past three, and to the big town about fifty miles away at least once a week for the past month. I really truly wish the world would go away. Which I suppose is how you know I’m not normal.

The ophthalmologist insists my eye is healing just fine, and that it’s worlds better today than it was this time last week. Speaking as the guy on the other side of the eye, I don’t think it’s working a bit better. But I have to go back again in two weeks. This is a drag, but allegedly there’s progress.

Patience, patience… remember that eye was in very bad shape before… You are the kind of guy who breaks a leg on Friday and is beside himself because he can’t run up and down hills again by Monday. Healing takes time, and the older we get, the longer it takes. And if you don’t let it heal properly, it takes even longer! 🙂 So get some rest already.

There’s this movie called The Quiet Earth made in the mid eighties – New Zealand I think. In the movie, this guy wakes up one morning and as far as he can tell, he’s the last person on the planet – I’ve always envied that guy.

I’m glad the doc thinks your eye is normal and doing well but it would have been nice if he’d given you this realistic prognosis in the beginning so the seemingly slow progress wouldn’t have been so worrisome.

I guess our daughter is normal then. In our 17 years out here in the boonies, she’s never once come to visit. Add dark and “dangerous” to the list of “good” reasons. DH and I decided that if she ever does decide to come visit we’ll tell her and family to go stay at Breckenridge(ski town 2 hrs away) and maybe we’ll meet here or there for a lunch. Chalk up another not normal as I head out for my once/week trip to small town for my volunteer job and errands.
