Total Fail.

Yes, that’s the tractor on the side of the road.

It ran so very well yesterday. I HATE INTERMITTENT FAULTS!

The one thing I know for sure is that fuel is entering the injector pump very enthusiastically, leaving it not so much or not at all. I don’t think there’s as much as 50 hours on the rebuild.

Neighbor J helped me tow it back home in ignominious fail mode.

I’ve had huge trouble with slime and black powdery stuff in my generator’s fuel tank.

The top and bottom of my problem is the mandatory bio component of the diesel finding water and turning into crap which clogs filters. The water always gets in somehow or other.

You have a much larger daily temperature range than I do, I have an almost infinitely wetter climate than you do

both add up to damp air getting into the fuel tanks and leaving condensation to turn any bio diesel into crap.

Do you have a glass on the lift pump to be able to see any crud? if you don’t, could you source a lift pump with a glass?

also, if you’ve got the frog spawn type of gel, you might be sucking air into the fuel system through any tiny pores in the pipework, which eventually fills the top of the fuel filter and causes hassle until you bleed it out again. I get that trouble too. the main symptom is difficult starting, it almost starts but not quite.

So far I’ve been dealing with my problem by using disposable in line filters which are cheaper than replacing the main fuel filters when they clog up with crap. I went through several disposable filters in one evening when the problem fist began.

If you are getting really bad problems, you might need to take the tank off, drain it and get it steam cleaned. From memory, thousand series ford tanks aren’t bad to take off.

Lift pump problems are rarer than bio diseasel problems, but they do occasionally occur. symptoms can include the sump oil level increasing if you have a leaky diaphragm, it’s relatively quick and easy to pill the lift pump off to heck for excess wear on its cam follower, and the cam itself.

    Keep us posted.

sorry about the typos – I did proof read – honest…

    Keith,

Bad fuel was my first thought when it started acting up in September but there’s no evidence of it. The filter is definitely not clogged. I drew a big sample from the nearly-empty tank and got no sign of solid contaminants or water. I really believe it’s a fault with the injector pump, which is killing me because I don’t think there’s as much as 50 hours on the rebuild.
