My neighbor Geiger Counter Guy has gotten into ancient weapons. Specifically anything remotely to do with Vikings. And that led to aggressive little hatchets, which led to tomahawks, which led to throwing tomahawks, which led to a place I never thought the universe would go. To wit:
Estwing? Seriously?Long-held assumptions are crumbling before my very eyes. I think of Estwing as the makers of the most hidebound – though excellent – hammer known to man.
The only change in this tool in the past fifty years or so is that now you can get it with a rubber skin on the handle instead of leather washers. But you can still get leather washers.I thought “tactical” tomahawks were a passing fad. I really did. But when I learn that Estwing of all companies not only makes one, they make several varieties … well.
I was wrong about cafe fairings on motorcycles, too. I’m wrong a lot.

No- cafe fairings are wrong, not you.
To truly unburden myself: My statement about cafe fairings wasn’t that they were stupid – which they are, except for racers – but that they were a passing fad. I made that statement something like 35 years ago, so…
Well, I wish the world would catch the hell up to ‘Things Joel thinks are Wrong’ because I’ll put more trust in a crotchety desert hermit than whoever is running things these days. Cafe fairings SHOULD have been a passing fad, along with tactical tomahawks, and Communism. Go figure…
Ummm..I guess now would be the wrong time to tell you that I have the single edge variety of an Estwing tomahawk and that it goes with me to Philippines where it has provided unbreakable service.
And cafe fairings ARE just wrong. Wrong like huge superbird-esque wings on the decks of little pissy Honda Civics is wrong.
A sick part of me wants to see that ‘hawk with a leather washer handle…
They make that!
They even make one in Blue.
One of their half axes goes everywhere my 4×4 goes. Never know when you might need to chop/whack/destroy something up here in the wilds of the Driftless.
