Anti-gun agitprop doesn’t sell like it used to?

Gun Control Thriller ‘Miss Sloane’ Has One of the Worst Opening Weekends Ever

Miss Sloane, the gun control thriller starring Jessica Chastain, over the weekend posted one of the worst performances of the past 35 years for a movie in wide release.

The movie pulled in $1,167 on average at the 1,648 theaters across the country it was shown in. It made $1,922,300, meaning it was the 11th-highest grossing movie in the country. It is number 79 on Box Office Mojo’s list of Worst Opening Weekend by Per-Theater Average since 1982.

That means Miss Sloane earned less money per theater than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace, and Gigli.

This was supposed to be the Brady Bunch’s big Hollywood break. They were very excited.

The poor opening did not stop the Brady Campaign from championing the film in a live-streaming event on its Facebook page. The organization featured discussion with Kris Brown, one of the group’s lobbyists, about how the movie compares to real-life lobbying for gun control.

The group, which consulted on the production of the film, said they were open to participating in more projects with the makers of Miss Sloane as the movie continues in theaters.

Brendan Kelly, press secretary for the Brady Campaign, said the group’s work on Miss Sloane represents a new frontier in its work to influence Hollywood on gun issues.

Uh, yeah. Maybe not so much. Hollyweenies as a whole love to hate guns, but what they really hate is embarrassing opening weekends. I’ve a feeling this will mark the weekend that Brendan Kelly’s phone stops ringing, even a little.

And another actor ends up on my do not watch list.

Oh, please. I have it on the Highest Authority that everybody in the 90% of Americans who want gun control went to see Miss Sloan. The only people who passed it up are the small and shrinking minority of white male gun owners. Right?

In the high-stakes world of political power-brokers, Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is the most sought after and formidable lobbyist in D.C. Known equally for her cunning and her track record of success, she has always done whatever is required to win. But when she takes on the most powerful opponent of her career, she finds that winning may come at too high a price.

Funny thing. The movie info on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB don’t mention the “powerful opponent” by name or cause.

Not many bits of news make me smile, but this story about anti-gun movie tanking makes my heart sing.
