Aw, man.

I just read that Merle Haggard died.

That guy was one of the few bright spots in a childhood spent surrounded by and really hating country music.

Then not so long ago I saw this bit of weirdness with him and Willie Nelson, pretty much putting the “Okie from Muskogee” thing to rest once and for all…

Rest in Peace.

About Joel

You shouldn't ask these questions of a paranoid recluse, you know.

  1. Definitely a step backward; granted that nobody’s perfect, we could use more Merles in the world, not less. Primarily for the attitude, of course–he seemed to make a habit of learning from his own mistakes–but also for his impact on the music. Growing up, I could never warm to country myself, although I tried because my dad loved it so much. (As an adult, I realized that bluegrass is what I always wanted country to be, and of course I even trended to the “newgrass” end of that.) Something must have stuck around, though, because I look back now with fondness at what some people call “old school” country–and realize I miss having the influences of Waylon, Cash, Hank, etc. around. (Jeez, if nothing else, just for a little contrast to all the puffed-chest pretenders.) Merle keeps that company pretty well, and hell, I’ll even miss Willie too.

I hadn’t heard “Everything’s Going To Pot” before, either–that just made me smile. Thanks for that. 🙂

I found out this afternoon and ya it sucks. Sat down and listened to the Highwaymen and has some good Bourbon in his honor.

MJR that’s perfect! They can play that at my funeral. (But hopefully, not soon.)

  4. On the bright side – last I checked Kristofferson, David Allan Coe, and Jerry Jeff were still kicking. Not sure about Kinky Friedman…
