B&D cordless drill – long-term review

Hey, remember this?
IMG_1265
Yup, eleven months ago I acquired this B&D cordless drill, a gift from my older brother, just in time for the Great Siding Project of 2015. In that time it has been carried up and down many a ladder, bashed, borrowed and lent, used on many projects large and small, and in between times cherished like an heirloom.

Oh, and the battery is apparently incapable of becoming completely discharged. I still don’t know how much work you can do with this thing on a single charge. All by itself that far outclasses the Makita and Ryobi drills I’ve used – and cussed at. It comes with a single battery, and it only needs one.

When the siding project loomed and I needed a cordless drill, I really wanted a Ridgid but they cost twice as much. I put the B&D on my wishlist instead, intending to buy it myself and expecting disappointment. I was wrong. I have no complaints, and recommend it if you’re looking for a new drill.

I was in construction for 20 years and had all the different brands. Come to find out that the B&D outlasted even the famed DeWalt. But tthen B&D makes DeWalt, kinda ironic isn’t as they are 1/2 the costs. Now retired I have a small 9V B&D that has the battery built in. Have had it for two years and absolutely no complaints. Still have one like yours also.

    B&D makes DeWalt,…

    I did not know that.

Back around the turn of the century, I purchased some 1st-iteration orange “Firestorm” NiCd tools from B&D that were visually and functionally identical to their Dewalt stablemates. This was the era of the DW9072 12V battery with the stem up inside the handle.
At one point I started looking up part-numbers in exploded service diagrams and found that some of the gears that looked metal in online photos for Dewalt part number xxx-00 looked nylon for the B&D part number xxx-01. Later combined B&D/Dewalt parts sheets had xxx-00 as the replacement for “no longer available” xxx-01
Also had some cheaper green 12V B&D drills, the battery from those would fit the Dewalt or B&D Firestorm, but would run them only slowly, weakly, and for a short time.
I’ve observed much more differentiation between the brands since that time. It does confuse my colleagues that I use Dewalt chargers for my old B&D tools…

Also Stanley and Porter-Cable are part of the same group with B&D and Dewalt (and Delta)

That lithium battery is the key; huge difference vs. NiCad.

Kids, listen to Joel. I bought a $20 cordless at Maynard’s. It lasted 1/2 project (i.e., 12 holes in some 2xs). Sigh. Onenna these days I’m gonna have another project wherein I will wire it up to two 12v deep-cycle batteries just to watch it scream before the magic smoke escapes.
