Ex-wives and traffic lights
Busted pipes and busted hopes
Politicians and lying bosses (but I repeat myself)
Who promise whatever it takes for you to crawl in that bear’s cave
But all you hope is the paycheck don’t bounce
And the IRS and the FTB and the cop in the rearview
Forget your name
But they never do
They’re your only faithful friends
What do you want? she asked
Quiet, I said. Just quiet.
Going to the big town about fifty miles away this morning. Maybe I’ll be back later.

Did John Callahan do that cover art? Also, FTB is…Franchise Tax Board?
I don’t know who did the art. And you’re right about FTB. The last couple of years I was in Socal the FTB made sure I never got lonely or felt neglected by the state. I’m quite sure they spent more on me than they ever got from me.
I always want to learn John’s relationship songs because they are so to the point. But I feel that someone I know might think I am talking about her when I am (mostly) really not.
