If you’re looking for cheap glasses on-line…

I really can’t recommend Zenni Optical.

Okay, I knew it wasn’t going to take any 1-2 weeks to get them, because I ordered just before the holidays. A solid month was a little overboard, though.

I wasn’t expecting frames forged from solid unobtainium by Tibetan master craftsmen. I was hoping for something that didn’t remind me of the toy aisle at Dollar General. I didn’t expect lenses to be lying loose in the case because they’d popped out of the frame during shipping.

All of that I can forgive, though. What I definitely wanted was lenses that had actually been ground. Maybe not to the actual prescription, but at least – you know – exposed to a grinder across their entire width. I am very myopic: I was that little kid you picked on in elementary school, the one with the coke-bottle glasses*. Even in polycarbonate, lens blanks for my prescription start out thick. So it really shows when only a part of the blank is ground into an actual lens. Even that wouldn’t be so bad if they’d done the same thing to both lenses, but when only one is left that way, it’s immediately evident to all onlookers. I’ve never seen such comically bad glasses.

In their defense, the reading lenses on the bifocals are a big improvement from my old 15-year old specs. So apparently Zenni did get the prescription right on those portions of the lenses they actually bothered to grind.

*by the way, I want my lunch money back.

    Ugh.

Mail-order disappointment always makes you feel like you’d ordered one of those army soldier sets they used to advertise on the backs of comic books, and they show up and you find out that they’re little fingernail-sized blobs of plastic that don’t even look like soldiers and won’t stand up.

    Or Sea Monkeys.

Ditto on what Tam said — and said in her usual inimitable style.

You’re gonna send ’em straight back, I hope?

I too have a screwy Rx and used Zenni for a pair of glasses. Mine work great and I’m still using them 2 years later. Email them and raise hell.

You must have won some anti-lottery there. I’ve been using them for 5-6 years and have never had a problem. I’ve had plastic frame, rimless, half-rim, and I wore them all until I needed new lenses. My son broke his, but he was 10 at the time and there are precious few frames that can survive that sort of abuse. I have never had it take over 2 weeks to get my order.

Was this the first time you used them? Also, you don’t mention whether you tried to get them to make it right. Any company can screw up. The real measure of a business is how they handle it when they do.

Oh, for crying out loud. They had better make this right… They do not want to hear about it from me… and a few others, I suspect.

But you do have the darnedest kind of bad luck. 🙁

  6. Buck says:

WOW, I have bought probably 8 pair of glasses from them and only one gave me an issue and that after I had owned them almost a year. Even THAT was halfway my fault for being a bonehead about a screw coming loose out of the frame. In my defense I WAS in the back country in Philippines at the time and the correct screwdriver was 6 thousand miles away.
But dude, did ALL your bad karma decide to descend down upon you in one week or what??

I’ve got a set from the same place you did and they work well. My prescription is fairly simple though. Worth the 50 bucks I paid, but not much more. I got a set of safety glasses for work at the same time on the same prescription from Mayo Optical (yes, that Mayo), the cheap crappy glasses worked, and the $300 Mayo ones didn’t.

Give em hell, and let us know what they do to make it right!

I want a picture of you in your glasses ( If at all possible) I have always wondered what an intellectual hermit looked like, oh i am pretty sure there will be no corduroy patches and no cardigan but still i have always wondered. :O)
