I’m getting fragile in my old age.

Helping D&L load boxes into their pickup from the storage unit where they’ve been for several years, I managed to break another finger. The middle knuckle of one, anyway. Hurt like blazes at the time, then nothing, then some swelling, and this morning it’s back to hurting like blazes.

Bother. Last time I couldn’t type for weeks without being reminded of it.

You shouldn't ask these questions of a paranoid recluse, you know.

No idea how this happened to you, of course, but I’ve learned to SLOW DOWN. Age gives us a chance for increased wisdom, but slower responses and more vulnerable bone/joints.

Fell on my stairs last fall, trying to move too fast and carry too much…Injured my back and still have not recovered completely. I’ve slowed down how I do a lot of things since then and, knock on wood, no further injuries. I just can’t get into a hurry, or try to lift/do things I know perfectly well are beyond my strength.

I KNOW it’s going to be terribly frustrating and inconvenient, but tape the broken/injured finger gently to the two sound ones on either side, and just LIVE with it for six weeks. You may lose a lot of function in that finger if you don’t do that. No need to see a doctor, most likely, since taping it that way is pretty much all they can do anyway.

Sorry for the lecture… I’ll go put my “mom” and “nurse” hats away now. 🙂

At the risk of telling you what you already know,I’ll echo Mama’s comment. We’re not as young as we used to be.I used to work really hard, and was Go,Go,Go all the time, and then I had a stroke.I’m recovering, but I have to be careful with each step, and if I do too much,I’m exhausted all the next day.Take it easy buddy, don’t try to keep up with ‘former Joel’

Joel, I’m not sure of your freezer/fridge power set up but if you have a ziplock bag fill it about half ful of water and add about a 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol and you get a great reusable ice pack that is between a slushy and a gel storing it in a freezer. 10 minutes on and 20 minutes off will help with both the pain and swelling.
If you get to make a “Dollar store run” check out the medical section. Most have heat wraps/patches and chemical Ice bags. I have a lot stored in the pantry for minor aches and pains and they are perfect for the RV/car 1st aid kits. I often find those little chemical hand and foot warmers 2 for $1.00 and after the first 48 hours you can use heat to help with the pain. Check the arts and craft section and you can get Popcicle sticks for a small splint and help protect the finger from bumps.

All kinds of good advice ^

Yep, it sucks when the body doesn’t keep up with the mind’s great ideas, anymore. It’s my biggest complaint about gettin old.

You all need to be more careful 🙂 Recovery time is ridiculously longer the older we get.
