In other news, all American airports and bus and train and filling stations to be closed…

Because anyone who can be described as a traveler must be racist.

Hey, why not?

Traveler, USC’s mascot, comes under scrutiny for having a name similar to Robert E. Lee’s horse

When Richard Saukko galloped his chalk-white Arabian horse named Traveler around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum almost 56 years ago, it was supposed to be a one-time stunt.

Instead, the brief performance before USC kicked off its season against Georgia Tech turned into one of college football’s iconic traditions. A succession of white horses named Traveler have followed — Traveler IX debuts this fall — trotting out of the tunnel as “Conquest” plays and the costumed Trojan warrior atop the horse waves a sword. But during a rally earlier this week to show solidarity in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., a USC campus group linked the name to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose favorite horse was Traveller.

At the rally, according to the student newspaper the Daily Trojan, Saphia Jackson, co-director of the USC Black Student Assembly, asked students not to be quiet, and reminded that “white supremacy hits close to home” and referenced the name of the Trojans mascot.

Sigh.

I don’t want to be niggardly in my condemnation of racism, but probably more than one white horse has been named Traveler. Also, there’s no evidence that the Traveler ever owned a slave, or even had an opinion about the practice.

  1. Robert says:

“niggardly” I see what you did there. Snicker. Be prepared to receive idiotic flaming if a precious snowflake stumbles on the post. Personally, I think they should STFU. It’s a sad state of affairs when you can’t use a word properly without someone getting their ignorant self upset. Me, grumpy? Nah.

  2. Kentucky says:

I don’t think anyone alive today ever owned a slave, but that hasn’t stopped the idiocy.

  3. Mark Matis says:

There are PLENTY of people alive today who own slaves, Kentucky. Many of them live in Muslim nations. However, smart money says there is no shortage of the Elite in the West who own slaves as well. YOUNG ones.

  4. anonymous says:

Anyone else seen the links which mention Nancy Pelosi’s father (mayor of Baltimore way back) was the person who DEDICATED at least two civil war statues during his term. Just too funny for words – wonder how MSM will slip in this tidbit.

  5. Kentucky says:

Matis, you know full well I was referring to this country and the tired issue of claiming victim status by those who were never slaves themselves, and attempting to generate guilt on those who never owned a slave. Unfortunately, the issue is not likely to go away any time soon since it’s a wonderful source of media attention and race hustler justification for their ongoing efforts to generate crisis for profit.

I’m sure he did, but he has a legitimate point too. All too often I get the impression that the media and academia think (or pretend to think) that slavery was a uniquely American institution. We get brow-beaten about the historical evils of slavery and its alleged current “legacy”, while the historical and current *facts* of slavery elsewhere are conveniently ignored. Wouldn’t want to disrupt the Narrative after all:-(.

So putting reminders out there, even when not explicitly necessary in the context of the discussion, is a good habit. Someone who *doesn’t* know might find enlightenment:-).

    Just my $0.02.

  7. Judy says:

Here’s my $0.02 worth. As George Carlin pointed out the vast majority of us are slaves. Most are just not aware of their condition. Merrium -Webster defines it as 1) drudgery, toil 2) submission to a dominating influence. Synonyms – servility, servitude, thrall Related Words – dependence, subjection, subjugation. True, nobody is taking a whip to us. But think about all the times you submit to the State or an authority figure or a boss.
