It’s still ridiculous, but a start.

The “Hearing Protection Act?” Couldn’t they just call it the “We’ve Been Wrong About This For Eighty Years Act?

A bill entitled the Hearing Protection Act would remove a $200 tax stamp requirement for gun suppressors, more commonly known as silencers.

Good, certainly, but of course we can’t just let people do as they will. That way lies chaos. No. We need to pretend that suppressors are really guns. For purposes of not-registration.

Under the terms of the Hearing Protection Act, introduced Thursday with 10 co-sponsors, gone would be the NFA requirements for the devices. Instead, federal law would treat them as firearms which would allow suppressors to transfer through any regular federal firearms license holders to anyone not prohibited from possessing them after the buyer passes an FBI instant background check.

Rather than the lengthy Form 4 process, which can take months, buyers would only have to complete the standard 4473 Form before taking possession.

Stupid, but whatever. Bring it.

Oh Joel, I have to say that I am jealous if this bill passes. Up here in the Great White North suppressors are considered prohibited devices and cannot be purchased. I would love to have one simply for the cool factor but it will never happen.

It won’t pass. It would be far more likely to gain traction if they proposed moving it out of the “SBR/SBS/Machine Gun” category & put it where it belonged in the 1st place, w/ the AOW [“Any Other Weapon”] $5 tax stamp…

Its the bullet that is dangerous, not the sound (well mostly) but what is the big deal over legalizing this ? The bad guys will use them anyway, the good guys will produce less sound pollution. Sounds like total goodness to me.

I’d love to have one, and I’m pretty sure the dogs and neighbors agree. Actually I want at least two, for the pistol and one or more rifles. But damned if I’m jumping through any NFA hoops, to say nothing of the government-induced market distortion which puts a cheap tube and a few baffles far out of my budget.

Hey Joel, I hear you about the cost. If it ever gets passed you could always do this.

Even if it doesn’t get passed. Sometimes you just have to stop fearing and do what you feel like doing.

I wish some day a bill would be called, “The Yet Another Bullshit Law Act”. That would be refreshing…
