Laundry day

Breezy and not half as sunny as promised, but still unseasonably mild: Time to move laundry day outdoors for a while.100_3725Been meaning to do this for quite some time. A couple of six-gallon mud buckets (Hint for would-be hermits: Never ever throw out a mud bucket) and a new toilet plunger.

The “new” part is very important.

Cut a hole in a lid big enough to accommodate the plunger handle, because it does splash. A quick squirt and wring-out before the laundry plops into the rinse bucket, and this technique works substantially better than hand-washing in the sink, which is what I’ve done for years now.

But this time of year the water’s like ice. Nice thing about the sink: It’s right next to the stove so I can warm up water conveniently.

I must admit… I’m surprised it took you this long to go ‘bucket-n-plunger’ for your laundry.

The guy at tiny houses dot com drilled a bunch of holes in one of the buckets and then tied up spun the bucket and it worked as a spin cycle of a washer. I can’t tell if your bucket has those holes.

Over at Jim Dakin’s blog, he placed the bucket on a rocking chair seat and used that rocking motion as the agitator (putting the lid on 1st of course). Bison Survival blog I believe its called.
