One useful thing we did get done over the past couple of days was coat M’s pantry/powershed with surface-bonding cement. Four hours to do the inside, and we wondered where the time went. Five hours to do the outside, and it went on forever and I’m still a little lame. Oy. It’s been hot lately. But the building is completely done except for the roofing, and then covering the whole thing with earth which I don’t think will happen till the house shell is up. Very nice.

Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Joel,
This cement you folks put on the pantry/powershed is it waterproof or water resistant ?
I am considering building a cistern under the house I would like to build and am collecting ideas on the finish for the interior of the cistern. Which would have to be waterproof not resistant.
Oh and about those “other humans” …. non illegitimi carborundum.
instead of building a cistern, take a look at
http://www.watertanks.com/category/6/
You can order a tank as big as you want, it won’t be as heavy as sin, and I suspect the cost is competitive with the actual cost of concrete, rebar, and waterproofing the homemade cistern.
Good luck

It’s supposed to be waterPROOF. Originally designed for making concrete water tanks, in fact. The specific product we used was called “QuikWall”, made by Quikrete. You can google it for more info.
Thanks to both of you for the responses.
Off to do some reading on finishes and tanks.
