So I got all these emails about yesterday’s FTP post, and they all said pretty much the same thing…

“Wake up and smell the 21st century!”

So yes. Thank you. I am now aware you can FTP stuff without using DOS commands. Got it. Okay. Really. Stop telling me.

-pssst!- Joel. You can stop using Lynx now, too. Someone invented graphical browsers.

    (sorry… couldn’t resist it. [grin])

  2. Joel says:

    Har de har har.

Though the way my connection’s been for the past two months I should probably look into a text browser.

  3. Bear says:

Have you checked the dish alignment? If your connection is that bad all the time now, the mount might’ve slipped. If it was installed the same way as another I saw, they probably marked the correct setting on the mount with a permanent marker. When you log into the modem, what does it show for signal strength in clear weather?

  4. Joel says:

Bear, I think if I had a way to check signal strength in clear weather, I’d find it low. Probably the dish alignment is FUBAR and always has been, that wouldn’t surprise me. All I know is the attachments are tight and I can find no markings to compare the current position to.

  5. Bear says:

Generally, sat modems let you check signal strength. Try entering “192.168.1.1” into the address bar of your browser. That should get you to the modem, and give you a menu to look at details like up/downlink power levels and your… traffic history. Hmm…

Don’t know about all these sat services, but Hughes used to cut users back to about 24KB/sec (less than normal dialup) when they exceeded bandwidth limits in any rolling 24 hour period. You were busting nthe bandwidth bank were you?

  6. Joel says:

Nope. I’ve got a pretty draconian bandwidth limit, but I keep an eye on that. I’m nowhere near the limit.
