So that’s a…compromise?

Hey, remember last month when Virginia’s Attorney General threw CCW holders under the bus?

Well, good news, everyone! Governor Terry McAuliffe and “republican leaders” have concluded a series of backroom agreements that restores reciprocity, sort of, and all the repubs and the NRA had to give away was any hope of Virginia gun owners ever feeling safe from the state…

In exchange, Republicans softened their stances on issues that have long been non-starters in the GOP-controlled General Assembly. Under the deal, the state would take guns away from anyone who was under a two-year protective order for domestic-violence offenses. And State Police would have to attend all gun shows to provide background checks for private sellers if they requested the service.

So everything’s cool, Virginia, except that you better never get your wife mad at you and there’ll be armed goons looking over your shoulder any time you think it might be fun to pop into a gun show. But other than that, yay! Say hey for the beauties of compromise, I guess…

Wonder how many will “request the service”? Seems like a hollow threat to me, but I guess we’ll see.

State police are almost always in any gun show across the country.
And now, Virginians can carry in 3 more states than they could before. http://www.fredericksburg.com/news/state/government/bryce-reeves-introduces-bill-to-overturn-ag-s-concealed-carry/article_13736470-8338-5411-898f-3469111b87cc.html

People under a two-year restraining order for hitting their wives or significant others don’t keep their guns? The world can deal with that. I understand the potential for abuse of that statute. I wish it hadn’t happened. I wish they hadn’t compromised. But practically, I think 99% of people in that state won’t be affected by the statute at all. Except those who want to travel to Colorado, New Hampshire and Georgia. Because now they can.

There is a LOT of comments on that news blog B.B. pro and con about that measure. Hey you lose a few, you win a little bit more. Hey Virginia you’ve got 27 states now where your CHL/CCW is good, so quit yer bellyachen. Mainer’s can only reciprocate w/Florida. You got it GOOD.

The so-called “compromise” only prohibits conduct (possessing a firearm while under a restraining order) that is already prohibited by Federal law. I suspect it was only adopted so McAuliffe could “save face” by saying the agreement was a “compromise.” In reality, it was a total capitulation!
