The Door Into Acceptable Weather

Robert Heinlein opens his novel The Door Into Summer* with a vignette about a cat that refuses to believe it’s winter outside until it has satisfied itself that the weather outside every exterior door in the house is winter – a failing for which it bitterly holds its human responsible.

On days like this, Ghost shows one of the reasons why he should have been born a cat.

Three times he has insisted on going outside, of course not including the first time which was a physical necessity. The first two times he turned right around on the porch and slunk back indoors. Just now, a little after noon, the sun came out briefly and he thought maybe I’d finally gotten my meteorological act together. Didn’t even go anywhere, he just laid down on the warm dirt to resume his nap.

Then the sun went away and it started to rain again.

I’m in disgrace.

*The perfect late/early-period Heinlein, if you’re not familiar with it.

The Door Into Summer was actually my introduction to Heinlein, and it’s been my all time favorite story since then. Double Star is second.

And yes, every animal I ever had held me personally responsible for the weather. 🙂 Laddie loves the snow, but rain not so much. I have to mow the yard soon… he’s so short he gets soaking wet in the tall grass.

Hush! You’re destroying the AGW caused never ending drought meme. What are you some kind of denier?
