Ian came to visit yesterday, and we did some work together, and while we did we of course talked about guns. And he mentioned that he was in communication with some German guys who were making a tactical version of the FG-42.
And I said the FG-42, which we have both had opportunity to play with and which may be the one military rifle I genuinely jones for, was used exclusively by elite paratroopers and is by definition every bit as “tactical” as a rifle can possibly be.
And he said, it has no black plastic. It has no picatinny rails. It is, therefore, not tactical. And he showed me a picture of what I assumed was going to be a trendy kludge of what was already the perfect fighting rifle. This isn’t the picture he showed me…
But it’s close. Picture this rifle with a 14″ barrel and without the big muzzle brake, and you will have the mental picture that’s making Uncle Joel’s heart go pitty-pat. I’ll bet it’s damned unpleasant to stand next to when it’s doing its thing, but then so is the original.

I hate it when I drool on my keyboard.
That thing is serious business.
