Updates on the various aw shits…

Ian had just enough 1X12 left from his bookshelves to replace that too-shallow ammo shelf, so I ripped it to 10″, radiused one corner so I wouldn’t bang my shoulder on it going up the loft ladder, and screwed it into place. I was originally reluctant to use 1″ lumber there, but it’s pretty short and seems fine. It’s not flexing at all.

#7, the hen that damn near got pecked to death last week, is doing fairly well at present. She and the four RIR pullets were already acquainted and have no trouble getting along. Her back is bare skin, of course, but the wounds are healing nicely. Now if she’d just get over it enough to lay me an egg or two, she’d be welcome to stay. I lost my best laying hen when I had to move Agnes the Red to the Big Chickenhouse.

Meanwhile Selma is still quarantined. I don’t know whether I should let her out with the others or not. She didn’t play well with others before, but there’s been well over a week for her to get used to them and she’s not being antagonistic. Sure would be nice to get that second coop out of the Fortress.

And finally, I got word today that it’s near certain I’m going to lose my shit-shoveling gig. So I need to come up with another income stream, possibly very quickly. Getting into town regularly would be a very large problem, but there aren’t a lot of opportunities to make money here in the Gulch. Not sure what I’m going to do about this. I make up a lot of my needs through barter and scrounge, but for some things you still need cash. Guess I’ll start brainstorming it. Right now I’m wishing that one editing job had had some sisters, because that was sweet.

ETA: Oh! One other thing!

As far as the income stream goes, I’m quite certain there’s enough of us who enjoy this blog to do pretty well at bridging the gap while you find another revenue source. I wish you luck with the brainstorming.
