A fellow likes to have a good supply of the things he depends on. Rarely eat oatmeal in summer, but in winter it’s pretty much a daily thing. And I don’t mean that library paste they sell at the supermarket.
Got a care package over the weekend, consisting of 25 pounds of the good stuff.

Which is more than enough to fill a food bucket. Which in turn is more than enough to get through a winter with no rationing at all.
Talking to the propane guy this morning, he said what I’ve noticed; “Don’t know quite what to expect. Some people say this is gonna be a regular winter, and some say it’s gonna be really cold and wet on account of that El Niño thing.”
I said I’d heard the same, and was planning for that second thing. Cut as much firewood as I could while it was warm, and now both my oatmeal buckets are filled to capacity. Warm clothes are in good shape, the Lair has been wrapped and sided. This will be my tenth winter in the boonies, and for once I feel like I’m ready for it.

Oatmeal, yum. Nothing like a mass of oats in the stomach on a cold day. Whole milk and raisins or dried cranberries, and whatever else you can throw into it.
I never have seen the point of instant, since regular only takes 2.5 minutes in a microwave. But then I like a little texture, not mush or paste.
