Yes. I rarely noticed him.

I wasn’t going to say anything about David Bowie, who probably wasn’t much of a factor in your average redneck kid’s life – he certainly didn’t influence mine in any noticeable way. But I did run across this quote in a sidebar comment at Ace of Spades – and it’s a sad commentary on the influence of American celebrity…

…when you think about it, David Bowie had a remarkable opportunity to be extremely annoying in all ways (including politically) and yet was barely annoying at all.

Ditto. As an adult I vaguely know who he was. As a kid, he was just an insignificant speck on the landscape of my life.

Before yesterday, I would have authoritatively told you that “Major Tom” was a Beetles song. Now I know that is was called “Space Oddity” and was actually by Bowie. Go figure. This makes me wonder how many other things that I am certain about, are actually malarkey.

Funny you should mention Space Oddity. One time in ’70 or ’71 my younger brother brought home a demo single of that song. Don’t recall where he got it. We weren’t friends and rarely agreed on anything, but we did agree at that time that this was the stupidest song we’d ever heard and that “David Bowie,” whoever he was, wasn’t going anywhere.

He and Iman had been together since 1990, and married since 1992. When’s the last time a rock star and a supermodel did that? Never.
