You guys want to see something kind of cool?

Okay, I know this is really nothing new except to old Joel (what century did he move into that cave?) The Hermit, but I think it’s cool.

You know that flashlight I’ve been going on about? I’ve been having fun with it. One of the irritating things about it – not wrong, just not what I’m used to – is the way it needs to sit in a holster.

Below is my old Leatherman flash. There’s nothing really wrong with the Leatherman, it’s bright and reliable and doesn’t blow through batteries. But it’s large and heavy for what it does, and I found myself leaving it off my belt and then not having a flashlight with me when I needed one, which is several times on a normal day. Part of living way off-grid is there isn’t always a light switch around when you need one. So I moved to the little Gerber, but before I did that I carried the Leatherman for years.

The Leatherman, obviously, goes into the holster lens-up. So my left hand is trained: Draw the light, rotate 90o clockwise and mash the button on the endcap.

But the BLF goes into the holster lens-down, and it actually took a while to figure out why I kept standing there like an idiot with the on-off button pointed toward the thing I’d hoped to illuminate.

Well, it appears somebody thought of that. Last night I pulled out the battery for recharging, and got to wondering what else was in there. And look what I found out…

Innat cool? The body tube is identically threaded on both sides, so I could swap ends if I wanted to. I don’t, because I think lens-down is better, but I could.

Yeah, I know. They’re probably all like that. I’ll shut up now.

About Joel

You shouldn't ask these questions of a paranoid recluse, you know.

I’m looking for a better spare magazine holder. What I’m using was a knife sheath, and the magazine does fit… but the flap will only snap shut if the magazine is in backwards. The ammo is up, but faces the wrong way for a fast reload. I’ve practiced with it enough to know that it’s never going to be a good deal, so need another holder. Can’t believe how expensive those things are… 🙁 But what has to be, has to be.

My mag light fit so tight in its holder that I finally moved it to my utility pouch, along with the knife and a few other things that won’t fit in my pockets (and I never carry a purse). Slowly getting my gear organized to suit me. 🙂
