…causing the door to blow open and stay that way, probably for several hours before I got there for evening chores.

Number of chickens that chose to escape into the scary wild: 0.

Actually they were clustered as far from that terrifying door as they could get their pudgy selves. In some ways I like Brahmas. If only they laid an occasional egg…

    Many but not all hardware packages (but usually Stanley brand) containing draw bolts like in your photo include a strike plate to reinforce the hole drilled so close to the edge of the stop in the door jamb. Might not be at the local dollar store but defiantly less than $10 at a proper hardware store.

    What R said. Either some sort of strike plate or a spacer so that the bolt hole isn’t so close to the edge of the board.

    I woke up this morning thinking of that picture and wondering why The Modern Man didn’t engineer that installation a little differently. (Yes, I know. Armchair quarterbacking is so easy.)
