#4: That is one nasty looking squirrel.

I didn’t even suspect that I had a fourth squirrel until I saw him late this morning, and once I re-set the trap he wasted no time falling into my evil clutches.0705151451I felt a little bad about dispatching #3, because he was smart and wily and hard to catch. This one, I’m doing the species a favor.

Then I’ll set the trap again, because where there’s a #4 there’s probably a #5. Why am I getting all these ground squirrels all of a sudden?

  1. Ben C says:

They are the scouts from the moo cows. Sent in to determine if the gultch was safe for transit by their bovine overlords. Since they are failing to return to report, there may be an escalation in type and force by the scouting parties.

    Prepare yourself.

Ben C., you could be right. I always suspected that ‘The Far Side’ was an instruction manual, masked as comedy.

  3. Emily Summer says:

That actually looks like a tree squirrel. Maybe not, as we have ground squirrels (desert rats) with no tail….more like a prairie dog. We cleaned out a nest with 12 last week. They will take over if you let them.

  4. Matt says:

It is a species of tree squirrel that has adapted to live in ground burrows and rock piles. They have a good presence in AZ. They might of shown up due to the pack rat population being reduced.

  5. Joel says:

Swell. So in my unrelenting effort to reduce the annoyingly messy but mostly non-destructive packrats, I’ve brought this plague upon myself? Have you seen the inside of my powershed? I’m almost afraid to look through my food buckets.

    Yeah, cool. I blame Zelda.

  6. coloradohermit says:

Since the ugly stupid cow creatures have already been brought into the discussion, I suspect that the cows trampled and stomped and drove the squirrels out of their normal habitat range. But blaming Zelda could work too. 😉

There’s a typo in the headline. That’s tasty, not nasty. 🙂

To the stake with the heretic!
