Met L this morning. Their garbage was out of control, and she’d asked me for help with a dump run.
This involves hitting the pavement a few miles to the north…

…and then hanging a right into an ash field about as desolate as anything you’re likely to encounter this side of the moon. Goes on for miles.

Once you’re there, it’s pretty much your average landfill. Though I must say – for all my criticisms of this place’s ubiquitous but dysfunctional governance – The local landfill is certainly energetically and apparently well managed.

Big piles of moldering garbage don’t seem to stay aboveground very long, ever.
Hey, cut me some slack. Unless something’s actually getting killed, this is as adventurous as my day ever gets.
On the trip she filled me in on the latest D news, which is unfortunately not good.
They’re not close to getting his infection under control, or even well understood. His white count is way back up, his blood oxygen saturation is way back down, the abscess on his liver has grown to something like 2 and a half inches across, and they can’t get the stuff they’ve been draining out of him to grow in a culture medium so they don’t even know what it is yet let alone what’s causing it. D is suffering and in poor spirits, L is visibly trying not to freak out over it, and we don’t know what the future holds. I’m becoming very worried for my friend.
While there I was able to do a few chores for her that are normally D’s job, like showing her how to top off the battery electrolyte levels and moving a barbecue and getting it hooked back up to propane. If things keep according to plan we’ll be making a run for hay on Friday: Another neighbor is scheduled to come help unload 40 bales, since they missed their usual stock-up time and feed is running low. But between now and then she might need to drop things and run back to the city.

Oh crap, well today has just been a gem for bad news. I am still optimistic and my thoughts and prayers are for the recovery of D.
Oh lord. That’s terrible for D & L, especially after things were looking hopeful just days ago. How bizarre to think they can’t even culture the beastie that’s damaging him so badly. But thanks for letting us know, Joel.
FWIW, Joel, I’m sending out the best good will vibes I have to offer, after everyone has gone to bed and it’s just me, the wood and the strings. It’s as close as I come to prayer, and it often treats me that way too.
Prayers up for D&L. It sounds a lot like a case I heard about on a forum I frequent. That was a case of Listeria which is seemingly quite difficult to treat if not caught really early.
Joining others in sending positive thoughts and energy to both of them, along with thoughts to the people treating D that they can do more to identify and treat the source(s) of his infection. Thanks for the update and thanks to all neighbors helping L keep up with ongoing home maintenance.
Ill be hoping for the best for them , but in our small colorado county 3 have died from ( it sounds like ) real similar infections . This is in a county too underpopulated to have a stoplight in the entire county
