Guns are bad, m’kay?

And so bad people should not have them. And who decides who’s a bad person? We do. So suck it, gunhuggers.

Yeah, I’m sure nobody saw this coming…

Feds Stop Processing NICS Denial Appeals

Each year thousands of Americans are wrongfully denied their Second Amendment rights[*] when NICS incorrectly determines that they are prohibited from firearm ownership. Compounding this grave injustice, this week the FBI made public that they have stopped processing NICS denial appeals.

In what was dubbed a “makeshift reorganization” in a January 20 USA Today article, employees tasked with reviewing NICS appeals have been “temporarily” reassigned to assist with the considerable increase in background checks.

In the interest of full disclosure/tmi, Your Humble Blogger once failed the hell out of a background check. It was – like all my imperial entanglements – all about how I can never keep my papers in order. It’s like a pathology with me.

See, I had a day off with two items on my to-do list: Go to the DMV to renew my driver’s license**, and go to a gun store to buy a particular rifle. Guess which I chose to do first? And that was a big mistake, because when the feds or possibly the staties or somebody with the power to say me nay ran the license I handed the salesman over the counter it was no longer valid. No gun for you, terrorist.

It got worked out in the end, but that was the last firearm I ever bought over an FFL’s counter. And I don’t know how many people like me there are in this country – it may not be very many but I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in my aversion to Men in Suits looking over my shoulder while I buy guns and gun stuff. So in light of the huge numbers of people buying OTC guns in the Land of Obama, I often wonder how much churning the market does below that surface…

*For the record, I really hate that phrase. My right to defend myself and my property has nothing to do with any law some dude wrote down, nor any amendment to it.

**Because this was really a long time ago, when I had one of those…

I have bought guns from dealers, but probably never again. I did experience having my DL expire once, mostly because I never needed to show it in those days and plain forgot it existed. I got a little note from the DMV, went in and took care of it. No problem – except for the theft and humiliation. Of course, that was long ago.

More recently, at the end of October last year, someone pointed out that my car “tags” were expired, due in May. I was shocked, knowing I’d paid the extortion, but sure enough the tags on the car were from the previous year. Nobody seems to mind here, actually, since I’d never been pulled over…. but I went looking in my library bag – that being the logical place for me to put them after coming out of the courthouse. I always have to come home and clean the mud off the license plates first… and it seems I had skipped that part. The tags and registration card were still in the bag, tucked into a side pocket I never use otherwise.

Mamma Liberty you are a bad, bad lady… I like you! Over the years I have had to deal with various government agencies i.e. drivers licenses, passports etc and I find that I have the want of a hot shower to get rid of the dirty feeling.

A few years ago I went and bought a bike of the 550cc Yamaha verity. I figured getting the license would be a no brainer since I had a bike when I was a kid doing the rebel without a clue thing. Well things have changed in 40 years and the system is a lot harder now then it was then so I failed the test. So since I already had the bike and the plate was good for the year I rode it everywhere with no license. The next year the plate expired so I sold it and made a couple of bucks to boot. I figured then as I do now that unless you draw attention to yourself by doing something stupid or yapping to a big mouth friend, there really is no danger of being caught.

Thanks, MJR! I’d hate to have to account for all the times I’ve managed to get to town and realize I didn’t have my wallet, and therefore no “license.” I keep some cash in the car, so I seldom have to come back home for that, but I don’t worry about it. I’ve never been “pulled over” since I’ve been here, save for one time when it was more of a joke than not… and I didn’t have to show the DL even then. And imagine… I’m openly armed at all times too. Gads, I love it here. 🙂
