Which explains why there’s not the slightest evidence of their existence, despite decades of search.
Why Superintelligent Machines Are Probably the Dominant Lifeforms in the Universe
How can they “probably” be the dominant lifeform of anything, when the whole article is blueskying a scenario with roughly the likelihood of Ringworld?
I’d bet this Susan Schneider is a big global warming believer. Can’t imagine why that seems so likely.

Machines are not “life forms” to begin with. Never will be either. There are already combinations of machine and “life” forms, and some life forms may allow a machine to control them, but it’s not the same thing.
Are politicians a “life form”…. or machines? I get so confused…
And yes, someone who fanaticizes about such things probably does believe in all sorts of irrational things. The laws of physics mean little or nothing to them.
Truth is we may well be alone in this galaxy at least. An excellent book to read is Rare Earth by Peter Ward. He’s a scientist so it does get a little heavy at times. He points out the variables needed for intelligent life to arise are not only rare but also occur within different times frames. Using the earth as an example, what if dinosaurs had not been extinct. Civilisation might have arisen sixty million years ago. Considering that we have been using radio waves for about a hundred years how far would such a civilisation have progressed. How many times might it have risen and fallen.
The galaxy may have had hundreds of thousands of civilisations but the chance of two or more rising at the same time is pretty remote.
Well worth a read!
Schroedingers machine? It just may be possible.
