Autumn sneaking up on me…


Usually by this time I have my wood cutting done, or nearly so. This year I’ve barely even started. Hurt my shoulder just when I planned to get started, and I’m only now getting active again. A couple of days ago I made at least a symbolic start…


All along all the dirt roads that were bulldozed over 20 years ago there are these juniper snags, mostly rotted away but still with useable wood sticking up away from the termites. Juniper isn’t ideal stove wood for all sorts of reasons but it’s free, so…


I wade in and try to separate straightish chunks that will work. What I really need to do is haul out my Sawzall and knock all those pallets down to their components. That’s hard work and I don’t want to do it. Then I’ll use the table saw to make stove lengths, which is quick and really easy. But I need to get off my thumb before the weather changes – which it’s sure to any minute now.

    Did the wet season leave any good driftwood in the wash?

    No, the wash hardly ran at all this year.

    My wife used to work in a large hospital in TN and was talking to one of the orthopedic surgeons. He said the only people he never has to operate on are the ones who do yoga. There are a lot of books and videos out there on how to do it that aren’t fruity or anything like that that you might want to look into in the interest of maintaining your independence. Just a thought.
