Blocklite, 3 month review

Back in July I posted about a clever little LED flashlight called a Blocklite.
It’s now late October and I’ve been carrying it in my pocket every day, so I guess I’m qualified to post an informed review.

I like it! It’s small enough not to be an annoyance in my pocket, which means I’m likely to actually have it when I need it. It has proven durable enough. It throws enough light to be useful around the yard after dark (though not nearly bright enough to light up dark recesses during the day.) My fears about battery life haven’t proven out, since it’s still on the original battery. The rectangular shape makes it more useful as a work light than a conventional flash.

The idea is not completely without flaw. It has separated from the battery twice in my pocket, and one time that recessed switch did somehow get turned on and I didn’t notice until I woke in the middle of the night to see a glow coming from the pocket of my trousers. But it hasn’t developed any vices I can’t live with.

All in all, it’s well worth four bucks.

$4 – Not Bad! I was going to suggest checking out (if you haven’t already) the very similar 9V PALight. Its a bit more money, not that much.

I’ve had mine a coupla years, bought another one and still like them enough to keep around.

The same guy who turned me on to the Blocklite tried a PALlite. More than twice as expensive and as I recall it only had 2 LEDs.

  3. I bought one of the Block Lights after I saw your post and I use it every day at work. I am thoroughly pleased with it.
It’s small, no bigger than a Bic lighter, you could change the battery blindfolded, it is surprisingly bright when all six LED’s are on, it beats the nine LED round one that takes 3 AAA batteries hands down. I took it out in the back yard after I got it and it lit up the back fence thirty feet away.
The best part for me is that IT DOESN’T ROLL AWAY when you set it down!
You can stand it on end, hold it with your teeth or set it on it’s side in small places while working on something.
I have been through several batteries but I use it every day and yes, it has separated off the battery a couple of times. Wrap some electrical tape around it at the joint if you have to.

I don’t really like the small switch but as little as the actual light assembly is, I can understand it and yes, I have had it come on in my pocket too but I am totally satisfied with it and am actually going to get several more. They would make an excellent stocking stuffer, are small enough to throw one just about everywhere too. In the glovebox, a BOB, in the bathroom in case the lights go out, on your work bench, in a purse, tackle box, on the kitchen window sill in case you have to look at the trap under the sink, lots of places to just set one down so it is there when you need it.

Thanks for turning me on to it Joel.

    Phil
