Dirty Deeds etc., Part Deux

The morning was spent in holes in the ground, bending rebar, cutting forms, or running around trying to figure out why those things weren’t going according to plan.

I was concerned that I don’t have enough concrete, and I still might not have enough concrete despite efforts to alleviate those concerns. So when handed a chance to go to town in the early afternoon, I took that as a sign and bought more concrete. If it’s still not enough, I’ll know by Monday. When I will purchase still more concrete.

Tomorrow I pour the footers for the piers, install the vertical rebar, and get the forms ready for the piers themselves. Which will involve shoveling a lot of the dirt I dug out with the tractor right back into the holes. But not till the footer concrete sets up.

Then this afternoon I cleaned up Landlady’s batteries. Again.

Actually it turned out those stainless steel bolts were a big improvement. I’m getting this weird green sudsy goo, but the connections themselves weren’t badly corroded and the bolts weren’t dissolving like so many times before. So it seems we’re making material progress on that front.

It’s been a long hot sweaty day, what with one thing or another. So now I’m going to sponge off, feed Little Bear, pour myself an adult beverage, and sit myself down with a luscious lapfull of Barbara Tuchman.

This may sound strange, but did the person who wired Landlady’s batteries actually use copper cables, or is it aluminium with copper endcaps?

From what I have seen of your pictures, there is some really weird interactions between the batteries and the cables, and that might possibly be the source.

I’ve seen aluminium wire do some weird stuff before, and if the original jerk contractor was a cheapskate incompetent, then that might be the problem.

Have considered that the ambient temp is causing sulfuric acid fumes to come out of the vent caps?
Also check for a cracked top, by flushing the tops with Baking soda mixed into some water, If it bubbles after the third application ( first 2 rinses off the tops of the batteries and connection posts) , there’s a crack someplace..

I use silicon grease on my batteries. I never have corrosion on my batteries.

    Try copper nuts and washers.
