Does anybody here celebrate the solstice?

Because in discussions elsewhere I’m learning that’s kind of a thing, and not just among obvious New Agey flower children.

solstice
Personally I don’t celebrate the solstice as such, but I note its presence in the rearview mirror with pleasure.

Bonus question: Speaking of silliness, why oh why does our own calender use the solstice to mark the beginning of winter, when we’ve all already had ample opportunity to freeze to death?

Yep- I understand the meteorological winter is December-February; that makes more sense to me.

Does make one wonder. But I have been under the opinion that seasons are moving. Maybe something at work we do not recognize.

  3. Kentucky says:

I have always considered the solstice to be the MIDDLE of winter because now the days start getting longer. Yay.

  4. Allen says:

Spring should be the beginning of the year.

  5. Kentucky says:

Careful, or we’ll wind up with New Year’s Day simultaneous with April Fool’s Day.

    😉

Tennessee is the first place I’ve lived where the seasons seem to line up with the calendar dates. Fall is over, and Winter is about to commence. I like it.

  7. Heathen says:

Yeah I do, not so much as an organized celebration but I am Asatruar after all.

  8. Goober says:

Yeah paul, I agree. Spring runs well into June now, and it’s solidly October before one sees a wisp of fall. It’s wierd. Maybe it’s climate change. Who knows?
