Doggy Treats!

Claire sent me some cookie cutters and a book of treat recipes, most of which LB will never taste. I should eat so good! But there are a few I want to try.

I’m kind of on a schedule today, though, so he’s getting a variation on the treats I’ve made for him twice already which basically use whatever I have laying around. Last batch used most of the meat off an old laying hen, but from defrosting the chicken to coming out of the oven took like ten hours, and shredding the chicken was pretty labor-intensive.

This batch uses the same oatmeal/corn meal/flour base, but is flavoured with beef bouillon and brown gravy mix.

Make the gravy thin, then pour it into a mixing bowl with a cup of oatmeal and about a 1/3 cup margarine and let it soften the oatmeal for about 10 minutes.

Stir in 3/4 cup cornmeal, 2 tsp sugar, 1/2 cup water with dissolved bouillon cube, and an egg.

Mix in 2 or 3 cups flour, till you get a nice stiff dough ball.

Roll it out,

Cut the cookies with your new cookie cutter – at this point I usually just cut them into rectangles, which is quicker and (here’s a secret) the dog doesn’t care. But it is cute. I’ve never owned a cookie cutter in my life.

325o for 40 minutes.

Pretty much what I use, except I use cheap gravy mix instead of boullion (get the low sodium stuff) and I add cheap parmesan cheese as an additive. Lower is sodium (dogs can have major issues) and they don’t taste bad.

I can get parmesan cheap at the dollar store, that’s a pretty good idea. I used boullion as well as gravy mix because I had both (and the boullion really needs to get used up, it’s old and not dissolving well at all)in hope that it would give LB’s treats a meatier taste. Personally I don’t detect it: For my taste I’d have made them quite a lot saltier. But he seems to like them.

Joel you are starting to remind me of the way the nutritionists took care of what the animal collection at the zoo where I worked. It’s starting to look like LB is getting better grub than you are. On the plus side if it helps with LB and he likes it all is good.

And you can always take some over to Ghost and let him get the shiites in addition to the piddles!
