Laying hens can either grow feathers or they can lay eggs. So when they’re molting, they tend not to lay eggs.
Except sometimes they try anyway. I found this one laying in the middle of the Big Chickenhouse yesterday morning, having been inadvertently laid by somebody in the course of her other duties. It’s possible she didn’t even notice, it’s so small.
Took it home to feed it to Little Bear, but when I cracked it open…

Reminds me of one of those jokes that sounds funny when you’re about twelve, but is really kind of lame. Can’t remember the joke, but the punchline was “that damned rooster’s been using a rubber again!”
And I bet LB is not happy about that “joke”?
Oh, he just got one from my personal stash. I mix an egg with his dry food most days, unless there’s something else handy to mix it with.
I used to enjoy the defective eggs. The double and triple yolks. The yolkless eggs. The rubbery-shelled eggs. The micro-eggs and the “Ouch!” eggs that seemed too big to lay. The bumpy-shelled eggs. And I once watched a hen lay a bare yolk as she walked- then turn around and eat it.
Can someone explain how an egg shell can be formed without something around which to form it??
It’s kind of a mystery to me as well.
Maybe can be classified as an egg phart ??
