Fake but Accurate

Here’s a joke to get Sunday off to a good start…

THE BIKER

A little girl was leaning into a lion’s cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the collar of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, all under the eyes of her screaming parents.

A biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl and the biker brings the girl to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event.

The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, “Sir, this was the most gallant and bravest thing I’ve seen a man do in my whole life.”

The Harley rider replies, “Why, it was nothing, really. The lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.”

The reporter says, “Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the front page.

“So, what do you do for a living, and what political affiliation do you have?”

The biker replies “I’m a U.S. Marine, a Republican and I voted for Trump”. The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

** SELF-IDENTIFIED U.S. MARINE AND TRUMPIST WHITE MALE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT & STEALS HIS LUNCH.

I would also add that this is an example of why, when reading the news in any form from any source, the information should always be taken with a huge grain of salt. And, this goes double for opinion writers.

When you’re reading the opinion pages of your newspaper, online or wherever, don’t be fooled into thinking an opinion writer is part of the news media. Opinion writers are entertainers, nothing more.

Opinion writers, as opposed to reporters, are not only free to express their personal opinions, that’s a primary part of their job. They are paid to have strong opinions and to express them sharply and with style. They can choose any subject they want to write about, within the bounds of decency and appropriate journalistic inquiry. While columnists should adhere to a high standard of factual accuracy, they are allowed great latitude in characterizing events, people or issues in a way that expresses an opinion. Columns are not required, or intended, to be fair and dispassionate accounts of events. They are, by nature one-sided. Columnists may find it useful to give the opposing views on any position they take, or they may not, and it’s entirely up to them. A columnist can be tough, acerbic, playful, joyful, angry, chagrined, outraged or anything else, within the general bounds of decency that are embodied in the values of the organization they work for.

Sadly it is a reflection of what the media has become, hence funny with a grimace.
