First really cold morning

Forecast called for mid-teens and it probably hit that on the ridgetops. My measured outdoor temperature here in the Lair’s hollow is generally a couple of degrees higher than the forecast, and my thermometer hit 22. Forty indoors, probably would have been higher if I’d lit a fire last night but I only do that when it gets really cold.

The new tiles are cold to bare feet, of course, but what idiot would go around in bare feet? It took a mere hour to raise interior temperature 20 degrees and the fire wasn’t even burning all that well; made the mistake of putting a big chunk of hardwood on top of the kindling and that worked about as well as you’d expect. But even with that handicap the cabin went from shivery to ‘take your coat off and stay awhile’ within an hour. Now LB’s had his morning walkie and the chickens are dealt with, and I’m gonna just stay in till it warms up a bit outside.

Like an idiot not yet used to winter I didn’t bring the chickens’ waterer in at dusk so it’s frozen solid. That happens often enough that I keep some cheap stainless bowls around just for that. But there’s lots of sun; There’s a spot on the south side of the powershed that gets good and hot on any sunny day; park the waterer next to that and it would take a lot more cold than we’ve got to prevent it from thawing.

Good thing I had a Plan B comforter for the bed. Ha! How many people have a “2 is 1, 1 is none” policy for bedclothes! Me survivalist. I just unzipped a nylon sleeping bag I hope never to use as an actual sleeping bag. Speaking of my comforter, before it turned cold I spot-washed the mouse piss out of it and patched the chewed holes. But truth is it’s pretty filthy overall so before hauling it back up to the loft I’m going to try to con neighbor L into running it through her washer and dryer.

Shoulder still recovering. I’m more and more convinced I did bung up my rotator cuff; I’ve recovered a great deal of mobility and a modicum of strength, but there are angles where the joint just seems to hang up. Still using the Mak for an EDC gun, and may just do that through the winter. All the hard prep work is done, the pantry is full, it would take an extraordinary winter to run me out of firewood, and this season is designated for healing.

I live far south of you (south Texas) but one of my favorite cold weather indoors sleepwear is the U.S. military M65 jacket liner. Damn near weightless, lots of freedom of movement. But keep away from open flames, that material is itching to burn.

If you are just sitting inside the house, a poncho liner is da bomb !

The weathertainers are predicting a serious drop in temps from today’s low sixties and sunny to the mid thirties and flurries on Sunday. Looks like we just may become the Great White North soon.

Good to learn that the healing progresses. I’m sure if we only knew what it would be like when we got older we would have taken better care of our bodies. Don’t know who ever said youth is wasted on the young but that person was spot on.

BTW on another topic… Looks like Joss Whedon of Firefly fame is suffering a Democrat version of electoral postpartum depression. Sad, very sad…

Yes, Joss is disappointing me. Not because he’s a liberaldem, I knew that, but because he has decided – as celebrities so frequently do – that the world needs his political wisdom and guidance. Which will turn me completely off his product, even though the fact that I have enjoyed his product is irrelevant to his political opinions or mine.

As somebody elsewhere on the Intertubes said just this morning,

If you’re a business selling a non-political good, you should talk to me about your political preferences to the same extent my parents talk to me about their favorite sexual positions: not at all.

Those floor tiles just soak up the heat like a sponge. Throw rugs are indicated.

I may have mentioned this before (I can’t recall), but have you ever considered making a pop-can solar heater?

It looks like you could put a usable size unit on your east wall with the output going into the loft widow.
