Okay. I hereby decree that that’s as cold as it’s going to get this winter. No, seriously. I’ll write an executive order if I have to. I was sort of an executive once, I think.
I was talking to my neighbor J yesterday, and he said this was the first time in his records that we’d gone five days without the temperature ever rising above the freezing point of water. He was recycling his horse water by breaking the ice chunks out of the troughs and putting them into buckets to thaw in his house, then pouring it back into the troughs.
Forecast says that starting tomorrow it’ll warm up a little. Forecast has also called for snow three times in the past week, and we have hardly had any. NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT! One nice thing about this cold wave is that at least we’ve got ‘tricity, because the sun’s been good. Clear skies make for cold nights, but I try to sleep through those.
Tomorrow I have to help D unload a large house worth of floor tile, which is coming into town on a hired semi. That’ll be bracing. D&L have sort of adopted me over the past couple of months. I don’t think they’ve gone to town once without calling me first and asking if I want to tag along. They’ve also twice arranged their trips to the big town to include my optometrist appointments, and they’ve agreed to do the same on the 31st for the ophthalmologist. While that’s extremely kind, it’s not completely one-sided. D&L are mighty in their labors, but they’re also both well above 60 and not as strong as they used to be. They clearly expect the relationship to be symbiotic, and so do I, and so when he told me about the truckload of tile I just said “tell me when, I’ll be there.”
But Thursday I must go out and cut firewood. I’m going through firewood like crazy, and don’t think there’s a week’s worth left.
