I hate cold hands, and have a pair of gloves for every turn of the weather. Even indoors when it’s just cold and damp like today, I want something on my hands even though full gloves aren’t practical.
I didn’t start doing this in the desert, but many years ago in Michigan where cold and damp is a way of life for half the year…

Buy a 3-pack of cheap jersey gloves and whack off all the fingers at the first or second knuckle. Since they get wet easily, I like to keep a couple or three pairs working. You can just toss them in the wash, and they’re not as bulky or expensive as fingerless wool gloves.

Wouldn’t work for me, unfortunately… my fingers get cold faster than the rest of my hands. I made a cream from coconut oil and cayenne pepper that warms my hands right up if I have to work outside and get cold. Works wonders on feet too. My feet are always cold.
I use the jersey gloves as liners for my work gloves when it is cold. Being able to remove them for cleaning or drying is a good benefit. The combination isn’t as stiff as insulated leather gloves.
Wool liners are marvelous because they retain heat even when wet. The old army-issue combination of wool liners and good leather outers is great, although I now occasionally substitute heavier leather “work glove” outers for the issue versions for more durability in severe duty.
