That seal is swollen, but does not appear to be dissolving. It might work fine when properly clamped in place through the hole in the can.

  2. Kentucky says:

I’d run another test using a complete assembly, adding a washer to simulate the can metal, and see what happens.

Then let the assembly dry out and observe.

No such thing as too much information.

  3. Kentucky says:

. . . and should test the outer O-ring, which the above accomplishes.

  4. Phssthpok says:

Worst case scenario you could always try making your own seals:

    http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1390318

Put a bead around the base, pull it through until it just touches, then put a bead on the outside and install the lock-ring just enough to hold it in place while it cures., then cinch it down tight to compress and seal the ‘gasket’

  5. Joel says:

Phssthpok, I’ve used that stuff for years.

It works great for a while but then turns brittle and loses cohesiveness. I don’t know if it’s UV or what, but it’s not a solution unless renewed regularly.

  6. Kentucky says:

Description says it’s not UV resistant . . . nor solvent resistant, if that matters.

    Hrm….

Mayhaps then you could source some polyurethane automotive hose of the proper diameter to c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y cut into gaskets?

Or hell…just some plain old ‘rubber’ fuel hose of the right diameter for that matter…

“… you could source some polyurethane automotive hose of the proper diameter to c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y cut into gaskets?”

That might be the best, and the lowest risk answer yet! If you carefully slice fuel hose, you get guaranteed fuel-resistant o-rings. Right?

  9. Joel says:

I’m starting to like that idea, yeah.

To the stake with the heretic!
