Seriously, I’d like to know. Not saying it isn’t possible, but I can’t think of one.
I’ve never really studied the ‘sovereign citizen’ thing in any detail though I’ve bumped into a few here and there, usually in association with some militia group* or other. I’ve always classed them as “annoying but usually harmless,” and was unaware that they have been leaving a trail of bloodshed and mayhem. Er, somewhere.
I must be misinformed, though, because it says here they’re totally Public Enemy #1.
Carlin said local law enforcement officials he talks with consider their top terrorism concern to be people who call themselves sovereign citizens. Followers believe they do not have to answer to any government authority, including police or courts.
So I just wondered what, in a world where you can be beheaded for lampooning the wrong religious figure in the wrong company, these harmless nutbars managed to do to be regarded as so damn dangerous. Were there monkeys? Did terrifying anarchist monkeys get loose?

*I’m being a little facetious here, because I’m aware that certain feds have considered sovereigns dangerous for decades. In fact one of your Uncle Joel’s more terrifying moments – the one single occasion when for a while it appeared that he might imminently exchange gunfire with feds – came from going to a meet-up where he all unknown was standing too close to a sovereign who had pissed off a fed or two. That was almost fifteen years ago, and AFAIK he really was just a harmless nut. Y’know: until threatened and provoked. I was there. There were ninjas**.
**I lied about ninjas. There were overweight guys with M16A1s and woodland camouflage. They came, they didn’t see (that they were in fact surrounded by armed and terrified militia weekenders), they went away. We didn’t sit down and discuss their actions and motivations over tea, but these guys had the air of people who didn’t want to find what they’d been sent there to find. They certainly didn’t try very hard. It was later all blamed on a snitch.

“‘… the full spectrum of hate — anti-government views, racism, bigotry, anarchy and other despicable beliefs,’ he said.”
While two out of four is a barely passing grade, the possibility still exists that thee and me have as-yet unknown despicableness within our hearts that the DoJ will gladly root out!
“unknown despicableness”
I like that.
I may just steal it for future use.
It’s right up there with “incandescently stupid” from Jonah Goldberg.
😉
Today those same folks would likely send a drone to check you out, and you would likely never see or hear it. But if you did: http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/14/anti-drone-rifle-shoots-down-uavs-with-radio-waves/
I would love to see Ian check one of these things out!
I think this about says it all…
“Realizing the importance of the case, my men are rounding up twice the usual number of suspects.” – Captain Renault, Casablanca
Well, there was this fellow named Tim McVeigh who was deeply into this Sovereign Citizen movement…
