As he often does when he visits, Ian brought something unusual with him for a Forgotten Weapons video. After we shot the range footage, of course we had to shoot the rifle.
And to my pleasure, I found I actually could this time. It’s gotten to where the only rifle I can shoot with any serious hope of hitting the mark is my scoped Browning, because I can’t hit what I can’t see and I could no longer see through an aperture sight. The Browning’s a lightweight .308 boltie: One does not fire it for the fun of shooting.
But I recently got these new “really old guy” glasses, and I could actually sort of see the target through the aperture. Which meant I could hit it, more often than not. So that’s an improvement.
Thanks again to those who contributed to the Joel’s Eyes fund, which paid for the glasses.
But never forget, boys and girls, …
Guns r bad, mmkay?
I recently scoped my Henry. Not because I can’t see through the Irons, but because I need to adjust to shooting with scopes. I know my eyes are slowly getting worse and there will be a time where shooting with irons will limit my range to across the room. I still shoot better with iron sights, but I think its more in my head. I think the irons help me ‘focus’ better. it seems I start to get shaky as hell with a scope and I think its from me trying so hard to get those cross hairs to settle down (a positive feedback loop so to speak.)
I’m glad the Old Guy specs are working for you. I had quite a challenge working with my bifocals and iron sights but I think I’ve got it worked out – top line of cheater lens is just above center, the irons are now much clearer. Someone suggested installing the cheater on TOP of lens (I peer over top constantly anyway for close up work) – I might look into that next time I replace my glasses. Have worn glasses since 4th grade – tried contacts twice, but they are a hassle!
Dio, I hate high power scopes for just that reason – scope cross hairs are waving all over the place (when shooting offhand). Low power scope cross hairs are FAR easier to settle down and I feel more confident when taking the shot. My go-to deer rifle has a 2-7x scope but I leave it on 5x 99% of the time. None of my rim fires have a scope over 4 x, I’m not a target shooter, just trying to gain some protein from time to time.
So glad the glasses are helping. 🙂
The only gun I own with a scope is the pellet rifle I bought last summer. I don’t really need to read the rabbit’s mind before I pull the trigger. And yes, it is hard to get it focused smoothly. I never thought about it being too powerful before, but now I know… Unfortunately, it is not adjustable. May just take it off. I can shoot with the unscoped .22 all day and seldom miss, so don’t know why I’d need a scope at pellet gun range.
But it does make the rifle look “bad.” snicker… You have to look hard to see it’s a toy.
