Flemington, New Jersey – a bucolic little borough which last saw excitement sometime in 1935. With a grand total of 4,500 in population, there was a murder there in – um – okay, nobody’s been murdered there in at least the past decade. Wish the little town I live near could say that.

Regular readers will recall that recently the mayor and some borough councilmen got all exciting by reading about something called an “active shooter.” They seem to find the prospect of meeting such a person quite alarming. Their proposed solution would not comport with the advice NJ pols could be expected to give you, should you wish a means of self-defense. No, not at all.

Well, just a little update. The problem with small-town democracy is that small-town officials, when asked to explain themselves, often find it necessary to actually do that. Apparently there are some Flemington residents who want to know “where’s the fire?” before shelling out $10,000 for guns they’re not allowed to even look at, let alone possess.

*The Lindberg kidnapping trial was in Flemington, which I did not know. Or care about particularly, to be honest.

Silly politicians. I am wondering who told them 15 .40 MP5s and accessories and training and ammo are going the be $10k. Even at the much reduced .gov rates that us mere proles can’t get those things are $1200 a copy. The city of Whittier ditched the MPs for M4s because the Colt was actually cheaper at gov rates and they were talking a real bulk buy, not just 15.
But yeah nothing like having your own little militia.
If it makes them happy my dad used to keep a 1911 in his briefcase when he was our burgomeister. Of course dad was the most likely candidate for being the active shooter in the room.

In the original story it was 4 guns, not 15. I recall they had 15 officers, but they only seem interested in protecting themselves in public meetings.

Thank heavens our little town doesn’t have any “SWAT” crap or armored vehicles, etc… We had a murder here two years ago – turned out a woman moved here from Texas and her nasty boyfriend followed her. She was, sadly, totally unprepared to defend herself and, evidently, even let the murderer into her home.

Official reaction to openly (and presumably CC) armed folks coming into City Council and county commissioners meetings and so forth here is squirming discomfort from those few who came from somewhere else, and pretty much indifference by anyone else. Ho hum.

The folks in NJ really do need to get over themselves. Or, here’s a thought… quit doing things that make some people want to shoot them?

That’s just crazy talk, ML 🙂
