I know I’m still a city guy at heart…

…because this still always seems really cool to me.

Every time Landlady comes up, I make sure there are eggs in her refrigerator. Since there are only three laying chickens, sometimes it’s only a half dozen but it’s as many as I can arrange. After all, they’re her chickens. This weekend she told me she’d have a guest, so I saved as many as I possibly could and there was almost a dozen and a half. Hot as it has been I didn’t want too many in the Lair anyway, so it just made sense to move all but what I was immediately going to consume into her fridge.

But I miscalculated just a bit. Day before yesterday the girls laid three eggs, which I kept, and I ate two for breakfast yesterday forgetting it was a baking day. So when I started my dough, which needed two eggs,…

But it was almost noon, which meant the girls should have at least a little something waiting for me. I went out to the chicken yard, opened up the coop, and sure enough there was one egg in the nesting box. Problem solved.

I’m from Detroit. To me, chainsaws are principally weapons. You will never convince my hindbrain that food doesn’t come from stores and electricity doesn’t come from giant utility companies. So an egg carton that refills itself just never stops being cool.

I’m seriously getting the urge to do some chickens myself here. I eat a lot of eggs, and I sure do miss the home grown sort. sigh

For anyone who’s never had them, it’s hard to imagine how much better fresh eggs are over store bought. When we had birds, I much preferred the duck eggs over chicken eggs. Last week I paid the exorbitant price of EIGHT DOLLARS for a dozen fresh duck eggs at the farmers’ market. I won’t be making a habit of that, but it sure was a nice luxury and a luxurious memory.
