I’m always a little surprised when this works…

One day to go on the T&S gig, and the Jeep can do it with one engine cylinder tied behind its back.

Yeah, only two days before the gig was supposed to start, guess who got another rat nest on top of the engine and an injector connector wire bitten through right at the frickin’ connector so I can’t splice & solder it. At this point it’s like a curse: Every time I get a T&S gig and really need the Jeep, something Jeep-related goes badly wrong. White knuckles the first couple of times I hit that last really steep spot on their driveway, but the Jeep did it – and nothing new has fallen off on the bumpy bits.

Get some sharp small wire cutters dykes and cut back 1/4″ of the connector shell, take a picture so you know the wire orientation. Carefully peel back the insulation in the connector and re- solder, it can be done, not pretty but survival overpowers pretty. Then making sure the wires are not touching each other, test it to see if engine fires correctly, then goop it with silicon sealant wait an hour and call it good. The sealant will also discourage rats for a time, until you get a new connector or harness part.

Next time in town, get a box of mothballs, camphor, they are cheaper than dirt and you put a few in a bag and hang it near where the critters nest under the hood. The stuff will evaporate faster with the engine heat but it should dissuade the critters. There is also an “all natural” thing sold at Tractor Supply that supposedly works, but it costs stupid money. I put some in a car I have had parked for 20 years, so far no nests but somehow, the bloody squirrels still managed to store filberts under the hood. Tree rats with better PR.

    Terrapod, those do look right.

  3. Terrapod says:

Parts arrive at your mail drop on the 22nd. Hope you can hold out until then or do a jerry rig.

Thanks! I didn’t even know where those could be found online. I’m such a clueless boomer…
