Thanks to a cash infusion from Big Brother I was able to fill all the gasoline cans.

Next Monday if all goes well I’ll fill my two empty propane bottles. then I’ll be stylin’.
Had a bit of an unexpected shot to the kidneys on the way to D&L’s this morning…

I knew the south wash ran a little Friday evening. What I didn’t know was that it ran a lot last night, and cut a channel right through my road. Sometimes when the morning light is wrong you can’t see that drop-off until you’re falling off it.
Check this out…

That’s the package Backwoods Home Magazine calls the Whole Sheebang, which as I understand it comprises all the anthologies, all the Jackie Clay books, and a bunch of other stuff. Sells for $300, and somebody sent it to me for free.
And speaking of keeping body and soul together – guess who’s got a job! Yeah, it just fell into my lap as necessary things tend to do. I’ve done some gig work for the property owners’ association before, but this is more or less permanent. Nothing special, just trimming junipers beside the roads – but in the whole development there are 90 miles of road, so pretty much permanent. I still have to write up a proposal but since I’m already in with the only two board members who’ll do the deciding I’m pretty much in. Need to get a long-handle lopper in the next week or so and I’m not crazy about the one available at the local hardware store, but I already have a sawzall and a couple of brush blades, and when things get serious I already have a good chainsaw. So I’m good. This is excellent news, because since J&H moved away – three years ago – I’ve basically been living on contributions from Big Brother and readers.

“guess who’s got a job!”
Aaaaaaand the Assimilation back to The Hive is complete!
🙂
Good news on the job front.
Congratulations on joining the ranks of the gainfully employed.
Corona makes good loppers – regular size and extra large w/ 3 foot handles.
Or maybe those (big ones) were Stihl? Pricey, but … you could check ebay, etc
And get one or two extra blades for the Corona. “Only Corona parts will fit Corona tools.” – I have the 3 ft handle model and the temptation to over use it can result in the need for a new blade. Or new loppers.
Congratulatlons on receiving the whole Shebang from BHM. I think the anthologies are a great deal , cutting out the advertisements found in magazines. My only problem with that magazine (and Countryside) was that after a while, it sounded like regurgitated information, over and over. How many articles do you need saying essentially the same thing?
And you found a paying gig. Cool – always nice to have some spare change to buy the necessities of Life. Congratulations !

A lot of skills-based magazines are like that. There’s only so many articles one can run on how to build a table or Adirondack chair, or what have you. So they cycle through old ideas and try to update them given changes in technology over the years.
Congrats on the new job!!!
Fiskars is where its at for loopers. Bypass seems to work better than The bigger the better. And a pole saw for those special branches that always pose a problem for taller vehicles AND may have some rattlers sitting around the shade at the bottom of said juniper!
I second the choice of the Fiskars. They have a little gear piece that makes it easier for weak women like me to cut any juniper branch I can get into the jaws. Just keep ’em sharp because sand blows into the juniper bark.
Hey! Congratulations and watch out for mission creep….. the next thing you know you will be tapped for county drain commissioner and building inspector 😉 with no increase in pay, of course.
I have in fact ordered a set of Fiskars lopping shears, because it was a cheap choice and I’ve never seen anybody go too far wrong with that brand.
Also the job proposal is pretty specific and not susceptible to mission creep. Anything out of the ordinary almost automatically dumps us back into negotiation.
But not ALL the Fiskars are compound, so check carefully before you buy. And they make two different types of compound.

Links just to show you the difference, since I understand neither Orange nor Blue are in your local shopping area.
I’ve been using a set of the Fiskars bypass loppers with the gear for about 20 years – love ’em. A good folding pruning saw comes in handy for what’s too big for the Fiskars and not worth fueling up the chainsaw.
Good on you for the job!
