Look who’s back!

My ol’ buddy Comet’s here!

And he seems, er, relatively glad to see me.

Actually he didn’t act like he was all that happy about it, so I didn’t insist on renewing our acquaintance. He’ll be three next month and though gelded, is still a male horse. When they want to be left alone and there’s no good reason not to, you leave them alone. But I’ll be sad if he doesn’t want to be friends after he settles back in, because even though he can be a mischievous (literal) pain in the ass we’ve always liked each other. He’s been gone all winter for saddle training.

With Comet gone, Cruise Control has been the man of the house. And watching him try to act like it is a hoot. There’s never been a mare here (or anywhere) who couldn’t use him as a beanbag chair but you’d never guess it from his behavior. When both Belle and Avalon are out he gets to whinnying and pacing around demanding their immediate return. And it’s like somebody cast Richard Simmons as the lead in a remake of a John Wayne flick. He’s the size of the fleas on a proper horse, and he has this mincing gait on his tiny little hooves – it’s cute, but what’s funny is that I’m pretty sure he’s going for intimidating.

I just hope the breaking and training process didn’t damage Comet’s trust in humans. If not done very carefully and gently, it can alter them permanently as much as the gelding. Anyway, here’s hoping the big guy wants to be friends again. The little squirt is hilarious, and I know what you mean because we had a pony just like that when my sons were small. The love of his life was a very large palomino quarter horse mare next door. She couldn’t stand the sight of him, but he never gave up.
