Lost in the Internet

It happened again yesterday. This makes three times. Poor old clueless Uncle Joel opens Firefox and finds all his bookmarks gone. History, cookies wiped. Mew.

Of course I can’t remember the names of half the sites I keep on the list. So I’m Startpaging around, trying to find them. This leads me to strange things.

I’m going back to chipping screeds on stone with a chisel. Safer.

About Joel

You shouldn't ask these questions of a paranoid recluse, you know.

Try switching to Google Chrome. It keeps your booksmarks stored on the cloud, so when you switch to a new computer or hard drive, just download Chrome and all your bookmarks will be ready for you to use.

And lose my paranoid recluse street cred? I don’t think so.

I keep mine on a cheap thumb-drive, along with all the programs, utilities, drivers, and updates needed for a hard-wipe. It’s nice not needing to start fresh with basic drivers cluttering up your clean drive just to be able to go out online and get the latest updates…i just load the latest (or last one I saved0 drivers from the thumb drive.

An adequate sized drive dedicated to just such a job can be had for veritable pocket change.

Did you just update to version 16? I did it a couple of days ago and my entire user profile seemed to be screwed up. I did a system restore to a point before the update and I was OK. I’ll not be updating again until they get the bugs worked out of the current version.

If you (or anyone) upgraded to FF16 you need to roll back to 15 or get the 16.0.1 update; 16 had a major security flaw; Mozilla pulled 16 from their own servers almost immediately, but not soon enough to prevent some people upgrading.

I’m a great believer in backups. Aside from my usual backups I also run the freeware MozBackup weekly just to archive all my Thunderbird and FireFox data. I also run it before upgrading either program. You can get it here:

    http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/files/1.5.1/MozBackup-1.5.1-EN.zip

    or

    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/mozillabackup.html

But losing that data three times? Are you running a cleaner program? I’ve gotten burned by a couple that turned out to be “cleaning” Internet history and bookmarks for “privacy” without mentioning that they’d be doing that (it’s a good thing on a shared computer, say, at work, but not so good on your own home system).

    Says here I’m running 15.0.1.

  7. Woody says:

Bear, thanks for the link. Seems like a very useful little program.

Back up to an encrypted thumb drive is excellent. I just need to back up to mine a little more often! It’s an extra pain when it is encrypted… but nice to know that it’s not likely anyone else can access it. And my thumb drive has my entire HD on it, including the operating system, so all I need to do is plug it into any computer with a USB port and I can boot up as if I’m on my home computer. Awesome.

I do not download movies, music or videos, of course, so my HD is fairly lean. Might want to back that stuff up somewhere else. 🙂
