It’s “Rein in,” not “Reign in.” As in “rein in a horse,” or cause it to slow down or stop. “Reign in” makes no sense.
It’s “Bated breath,” not “Baited breath.” Bated, as in moderated, lessened in intensity, or stopped. Not Baited, as if one has been eating fish.

They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

This needs to get said a lot more often.
Also: a “fitness regime” is a dictatorship under Richard Simmons, not an exercise program. A “regimen” is a scheduled set of activities.
“Spayed” is the past tense of “spay,” so your dog isn’t “spaded” unless you’re hitting it with a shovel.
“Itch” is not a human act, it is a noun: when you drag your fingernails across an irritated spot, you are not “itching yourself,” you’re scratching an itch.
Nothing “needs painted” or “needs fixed.” Ever.
It’s “for all intents and purposes,” not “for all intensive purposes.”
“Gift” and “Gifting” are not verbs. “Give” and “giving” are the right words. You weren’t “gifted” anything. You can be gifted, which means you have talents, it doesn’t mean you were given to someone.
That’s all I can think of right now. Mercifully. I feel like I’ve been drownded in these linguistic abuses.

Aside from the ones Brass brilliantly mentioned, one of the most grating current misuses is “disinterested,” meaning bored.
“Disinterested” means impartial, having no dog in some particular hunt. “UNinterested” means bored, out of it, ready to change the channel, etc.
If I hear one more so-called educated person wrongly use “disinterested” because he thinks it makes him sound hoity-toity, I’m gonna scream.
