no no no dammit

The only private space project I’ve watched with interest (because it’s the only one I know of that wasn’t just selling services to the feds) has crashed.

Yes, it's a silly stunt for quarter-million buck tourist flights. But still, they'll be selling rides. Assuming this doesn't sink them.

This is apparently going down right now and there’s not much information except it says here that one pilot’s dead and another badly injured.

  1. With the recent cargo explosion at takeoff… one wonders:

Did they jump or was they pushed? Accident, or clever sabotage?

Actually all launch providers are happy to take anybody’s money, and even Virgin Galactic is out to solicit government business. Here is a link to the SpaceX flight schedule. You will see that it’s about 50-50 Federal-other. http://www.spacex.com/missions.

ML, rocketry is pretty dangerous, as is. In this VG case, there was apparently an elevated risk because they were test flying a new engine design and fuel (and reportedly there’s had been problems with it in earlier ground testing, which they thought they’d gotten past).

It’s sort of a tough market to be in if you don’t want to sell services to the feds, really. Merely speculative at this point, hoping that after you invest a couple billion, that there will be enough millionaires that will take you up on a ticket to pay off the investment and provide a rate of return.

So that pretty much leaves “selling services to (some) government.” And since American firms seem to be somewhat restricted about what technology they can sell on the open market…

One point of order that I thought I’d bring up – I did hear a statist acquaintance of mine at work mention that this crash was proof that the free market could not provide safe space travel, because of evil things like PROFIT and EXECUTIVE BONUSES and stuff, driving them to cut corners to save money.

Because, as I pointed out in support of his argument, government run, not-for-profit space exploration and utilization efforts have been 100% safe and never once resulted in an accident where people ended up dying.
